Selecting a base station for a USB modem manually

Good time, dear habra community, hello to everyone from the warm Anapa beach.

I came to rest and faced such a misfortune: the usb modem mts ZTE MF112 brought by me catches the 3G signal equally well both on the beach and in the house where I stayed. There is one “but”, on the beach the speed and overall operation of the Internet is sane, but in the area of \u200b\u200bthe house there is absolutely none. I believe this is due to the fact that in a residential area the base station is busier than on the beach. Of course, on the beach with a laptop is great, but there is a need to work at home.

The essence of the question is this: how to manually force (teach) the modem to cling to the desired base station?

Once upon a time on Symbian of early versions (mobile platform) there was a wonderful net monitor program, which just allowed you to manually select the base station. So I thought, maybe now, when I have a netbook with ubuntu 12.04 at hand, there is some kind of software solution, or a script that allows you to “look” for the presence of base stations in the area, find out which of them “can” 3G, determine the less loaded and cling to it for comfortable work on the Internet.

It seems that according to the standard, the BS itself tells the phone where to connect to it. And are you sure that the net monitor in Symbian allowed you to select the BS?

Such operations are now possible only on terminals with engineering firmware, which cost serious money. As far as I know, modem manufacturers do not now leave backdoors for choosing a serving base by a subscriber.
PS And the software that allowed you to "lock the frequency" (that is, actually select the base station) was called Field Test in Nokia phones. Net Monitor only showed alarm information.
