RT Sphinx index needs to be populated programmatically?

Hello!
After creating a new RT index, should it be populated programmatically? (i.e. writing a script that will go through all the records from the source SQL database and write them to the index?)

, I would even say that you can not have a sql database at all
if you take data from the sql database, why do you need RT then?
