If I were you, I would simply open the OpenWRT website , or any firmware you like, with a list of supported hardware, and select the appropriate device from this list.

Firmware support -> availability of ports -> suitable price and availability in stores -> online reviews -> Final choice.
FTP is not secure. There the password is transmitted in clear text.
It is doubtful that in modern systems (even for the home) it would be implemented. And if there is, then this is a bad system.
Well, maybe sFTP.
For 3-4, you can already look at something more seriously - in this price category there are already younger Mikrotik or Ubiquiti models, and not this shit D-Link (I have nothing against expensive D-Link, but there is a completely different price).
