Rewrite = copy-paste?

There are 20+ thousand pages with a description of 750-1000 characters (copy-paste).
Does it make sense to rewrite these descriptions (meaning a good rewrite, not a few words)? Or search engines now equate rewriting with copy-paste and it makes no sense?
I myself am not a SEO specialist, but a SEO specialist says it’s better to rewrite than a brazen copy-paste, but I still have some doubts about his opinion
