Replacing gtag with GTM. Do I need to delete and reconfigure targets configured via gtag?

We want to replace the gtag counter with GTM. As far as I understand, it will be necessary to remove the Global Site Tag code from the site and put it through the Universal Analytics tag in GTM. But what to do with previously configured targets via gtag? Remove them and reconfigure via GTM? Will the historical data on these targets be preserved then?
