Reader choice

Hey Habr.

I decided to make myself a present for my birthday and buy a reading room. Of course, I immediately ran a Google search, threw in a couple of options and decided to check what they say on Habré, but I found only 3 topics of 2011, where all people say absolutely the opposite of my choice. Decided to make an attempt to collect fresh opinions.

Details:

For myself, I have not yet decided 6 inches or 9.7 inches.

If 6" , then I really like Nook Simple Touch with Light I like
it:
- ergonomics
- backlight
- Pearl screen

If 9.7" , then PocketBook Pro 912
- a crazy number of formats

I would like to hear the opinions of the owners, if any. Of course, the cons are the main ones.
I'm also open to alternatives. In money, it is not particularly limited - quality and convenience are above all.
Thanks in advance.

If you still take 6", then take the nuk. I have had it for a very long time - I have never had any crashes, freezes, etc. Androyd can and should be attributed to its pluses, which means the possibility of rooting and installing Coolrider.
Nuka also has side paging buttons that competitors do not have.

The owner of the younger version is PocketBook 902Pro.
"+"
Abundance of supported formats;
Built-in linguo dictionaries;
Touch display (paired with dictionaries, it allows you to get an instant translation of a word - I often read literature in a foreign language);
Build quality - does not creak, everything is tight, there are no cracks;
Convenience for the eyes - "notebook format" with the ability to change fonts / sizes.
"-"
As such, I did not find it. The only thing I can complain about is the presence of WiFi and Bluetooth modules that I don’t need. And it is inconvenient to surf the Internet - there is no page scaling ... Although this is not really necessary for the reader - there are other devices for the Internet.
Conclusion: Very pleased with the purchase, never regretted. I've owned it for over a year and haven't found any bugs.

The owner of already 2 devices, PocketBook 360 and PocketBook 912, on the first one I read fiction, it’s convenient because the pages are small and you don’t get lost in the text if you get distracted by something, and it’s very convenient to carry with you. And on the 2nd I read those. literature, very convenient size.

It seems to me that 9 "black and white screens are not the best choice. It is clear that they are needed for reading technical literature, textbooks, but then color is needed. Today, these are tablets (color e-ink is not yet on sale for reasonable money). Therefore, it seems to me that you need to take either a 6 "reader or a 9-10" tablet. There is, of course, an intermediate option - a 7" tablet (Kindle Fire - I have one - received as a gift or one of the Nuks), but this — neither here nor there. It is convenient to read in general, but the rest of the functions are not very good.

As the owner of the 3rd Kindle and Nuka simple touch with glowlight, I can say that the Kindle has a higher contrast screen. And so much so that on Nuka after the Kindle it’s not comfortable for me to read. Apparently this is due to the screen coverage for uniform backlighting, the screens are the same. On the other hand, this is a matter of habit, and if you initially buy a nuk, you will most likely be satisfied with everything. But Nuk disappointed me according to this criterion, although the device is worthwhile in terms of workmanship.

Not the owner of the above, but I really like Nook with backlight. It's just a killer feature! Because it’s not very comfortable to read with e-ink in the room in the evening, it’s tempting to turn around so that the light from the chandelier / lamp falls exactly on the screen.
In addition, in a couple of years, it will not be a shame to use an “outdated” device without backlight :)

I remembered one minus of NOOK ST, I decided to / answer :) So, drum roll
In the default reading program (ie without rooting and installing all sorts of cool readers) you can not rotate the screen to horizontal mode . Or maybe it’s impossible in the coolrider, let those who rutted tell me.

I'll throw a couple of links to my own, okay? Not for the sake of PR, but just do not want to copy-paste and repeat.
1. about 9XX Pocketbooks and their nuances against 6-inch models, there is my answer: habrahabr.ru/qa/19570/
In short: it's convenient to read, it's not convenient to carry it anywhere. Dangerous in transport (large and fragile).
2. about Pocketbooks and their built-in features in general: habrahabr.ru/post/143492/ and continued here: habrahabr.ru/post/143847/
3. Nook Simple Touch of course has an awesome backlight, the build quality is excellent. There is only one drawback - non-rooted firmware, therefore, format support will only be sewn. But, as usual, some time will pass, and everything will be a bundle. Or maybe there is already something (I do not know).
4. Sony PRS-T1 is also recommended lately: on Android, like Nook Simple Touch, but because under Sonya, “our” community has existed for a long time, and for a long time there have been “correct” firmware installed by simply launching an exe-file, and opening up many possibilities and supported formats. I don’t follow this in detail, I don’t know how it is with those officially sold with us, but on gray devices all this goodness rises with a bang. And then everything that you put on it is limited only by your imagination and the availability of Android versions. Against Nuka, Sonya probably doesn’t have only this cool backlight.
5. If you are not going to upload huge libraries into the book, then many people still love Kindle for such modes with its built-in unlimited Internet and automatic synchronization of everything and everything. The book itself eats one or two formats and has counted, but there are a lot of converters, and there is even auto-conversion of some formats when transmitted via special email. In general, it only seems from the outside that it is inconvenient, but in reality people do not take a steam bath.
Ultimately, it's up to you to decide what you need. All options have their own characteristics, pros and cons. Any of the options may be ideal for your personal requirements, but there is no absolute ideal.

In the description of the task, you did not write at all what the reader is for and in what conditions you will use it.
I have a 6 inch Kindle. Everything in it suits me. There is no backlight, there is no 3J and there is no Android either, but what I have is enough for me. PDFs have recently lost their relevance for me a little, because I found an electronic library where PDF + epub is immediately included in the archive, and the latter is perfectly converted to Kindle's native format (only the screen must be rotated to landscape orientation in case of long lines of code in books )
