Raspberry Pi as a home media player. Will it pull?

A friend bought himself a large plasma, and now he wants to attach some simple player to it, a torrent rocker. He doesn't need much. Therefore, all sorts of nettops and other fancy (read expensive) systems are not very interesting.
So far we have settled on the raspberry option + optionally an external screw for movies (or a 64G flash drive) /
Since I myself have not played respberry, I’m interested in the question of its performance: I saw several reviews that state that movies show / stream normally, but I would like to hear the opinion of Khabrovites who held this toy in their hands.
ATP in advance.

If your friend asked you for advice, then he does not fumble.
Moreover, if you ask, then you are not particularly.
You will now be advised, and then you can set it up.
Moreover, there is money for a large plasma, even if he buys a specially sharpened gadget. They cost a penny for every taste and budget.
For a negik, a specialized device is much better than a designer.

If you watch movies, it's easier to buy WD tv live. The money will be about the same, if you take into account the delivery. If a friend is a linux enthusiast, then raspberri Pi may be an interesting option.

I bought a RaspberryPi specifically for this purpose and ... was disappointed. Due to the rather large resolution of 1920x1080, the entire shell slows down and it is not comfortable to use it. Yes, you can, yes, it plays video and audio, but compared to specialized players (for example, WD live), it loses. I will look for another application.
