This is a fixed expression used to indicate that the username should be here. Used for anonymous access or simply to refer to an abstract user. So, it’s quite normal that it doesn’t turn into a username for you. Framing with percent signs came by replacing such an expression with a username in templating engines.
In addition to what was answered above, I can also add that %username% is a windows environment variable that stores the name of the current user.
There are a couple of scripts in this thread to replace %username% with the username.
And, anticipating future possible questions: %companyname%, %devicename%, %address% will also not be interpreted into something more specific, even if you have an account on Habré =)
%username% is a semantic entity. one username can have several nicknames on the resource. if a username, for example, changes its nickname, and it is remembered mainly by the old nickname, then in correspondence it can be mentioned by the old nickname and everyone will understand that this is the old% username% with a new nickname.
usually this is just an appeal to a person, a user of some portal. they say it came from a leprosarium, where, due to some mistake, the username of the user was not shown in the greeting and tagline script, but instead the %username% substitution template was shown. for example: "The turkey is the only animal more cunning than a man, %username%."
