IMHO the original is better. And I don’t remember seeing the last edition in translated form.
Whatever you want, Bruce Eckel. The philosophy of Java is quite suitable for getting acquainted with the language - cmntaxis, etc.
And then you have to make a choice to learn EJB for the web or SWiNG and write a desktop program.
