Protective whip / glass on Gorilla Glass 3/4 - why?

In the reviews, I noticed devices on Gorilla Glass 4, where a protective film or glass is used.
How is it useful on such screens?
Gorilla Glass 3 certainly won't be superfluous?
What is your experience of using a Gorilla Glass device with/without additional protection?

Without additional protection - extremely negative. It's certainly not plastic, but scratches are not too difficult to put on. My previous Lenovo p770 lived with films for a little less than 4 years. The original plastic screen is like new, Chinese films can be changed very often. On the new samsung a3, the first scratch appeared in the first month. It's good that it had an extended warranty, they just changed the screen. But it is inconvenient to glue films / glass on it because of the curved screen. So again in search of a phone (
On the tablet, the protective glass saved when it fell. It itself shattered to shreds, but saved the screen.
