The description of the problem is akin to “Stomach hurts; gender: male.
On the topic - the version of ubuntu is old, I didn’t want to work on it either, I had to adapt crutches with jolicloud.
In the latest version (11.10) everything is fine.

As far as I understand, you have a wifi adapter Intel Centrino® Wireless-N 1000. If so, then all you have to do is go here http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/?n=Downloads and download the Linux driver package. The archive contains the driver itself and readme, it describes how to install it.
But the best way out is to upgrade, at least to 11.04.
