Prestashop only works when debug mode is enabled. Why?

After transferring prestashop 1.7 to another hosting and domain, the site (both the front and the admin) give an error 500.
I turn on the debug mode in defines.inc.php to see what's going on and everything starts working - both the admin and the front. I turn it off - again 500 error. What can be wrong? Where to look? define('_PS_MODE_DEV_', true);
