PHP 5.4 + RAR perhaps?

For technical reasons, the standard RAR extension for PHP cannot be installed on the server.
Are there any other options to unpack the rar archive using php?
PHP can't be updated either. In general, the server problem is solved only globally, i.e. doesn't fit now. I'm looking for a solution with little bloodshed.
