Photoshop how to make background transparent?

There is a picture, it has a single-color image with pixels with a transitional color along the edge. For example, this figure with a white background:

I need to remove the background, while the gray pixels around the edges should become semi-transparent. If I just select the background with a lasso and remove it, then some pixels remain, or vice versa, are captured, in general, the result is unusable. How to properly replace the background so that the border pixels have transparency?

A couple of ways:
1. Magic Wand tool. Set the Tolerance parameters in the tool settings, adjusting the sensitivity to the range of accepted colors, and then press Del.
2. Menu Select -> Color range. Select the appropriate parameters and delete the selection again.

Such images are usually pulled through channels. Switch to the Channels tab, which is located next to the Layers tab, hold down Ctrl and click on the thumbnail to the left of the RGB label. As a result, all white pixels will be selected, and grayscale pixels will be selected, taking into account translucency. Now it remains to invert the selection by pressing the key combination Ctrl + Shift + I, so that the black silhouette is selected, then switch to the layers tab, create a new layer and fill it over the selected area by holding down the Shift + F5 keys. Voila. You now have a perfectly clipped icon layer.
