Overlaying a layer on an image not visible to the eye, but possible to read, perhaps?

The task is as follows, the image is manipulated, the image is loaded into a place where everything is cleaned out of it (exif, etc.). Over time, I need to pull this picture again and understand if I have already done manipulations with it. I can’t just put a tick in my box that I have already touched this picture. They can replace it from a third place and there is no way to find out about it.
The next question, who is deeply familiar with jpg and png, is it possible to overlay a transparent layer invisible to the eye with data, so that later it can be read? Or other ideas for solving the problem.

When printing, you can display inconspicuous drawings in yellow ink. Epson does this.
