Out of stock icon

There are “icons” that are familiar to everyone, which are superimposed on the photo of the product and indicate one or another of its “state”. For example, a drawing of a red asterisk with the word “new” indicates a novelty, a drawing with a “%” sign indicates that a discount has been set for this product, and “sale” indicates a sale of this product.
And how can you mark in the same way that the product is currently out of stock? What methods do you use?

new sale

UPD. I decided to use the following option: make the product photo translucent, set the attribute:

... title="Нет в наличии. Поставка 01.03.2011" />

and the surrounding descriptive text (name, characteristics) is made half a tone lighter.

Thanks everyone for the options!

In my opinion, the best solution would be to make a monochrome icon (256 grayscale) for a product that is out of stock. Or leave the color, but noticeably reduce the intensity of the color. To make the icon look "gray", inactive.
And when hovering / clicking the cursor, so that a hint “the product is out of stock” appears.
It will be very good if it is indicated when the goods are expected to arrive.

You can use the inscription "out of stock" in the form of a seal.

There is an option to overlay a picture with a wooden hammer, which is used at auctions (judging by the films) in the upper right corner of the picture with the product + diagonally a ribbon with the previously proposed phrase OUT-OF-STOCK. The hammer will be associated that everything is sold out. Although this option would probably be suitable for online auctions, it also seems to be normal for a regular online store.

Is it not wiser to remove goods that are temporarily out of stock?
Or, if the product is temporarily out of stock - a signature in the description, advising you to look at analogues / offering to leave a pre-order?
It's just not clear why a potential buyer should see an item that he won't be able to buy anyway.

I have an option to overlay a truck icon that will indicate that the goods will arrive soon and will be in the store. Well, the signature title.

1. Sort - goes to the end in all lists
2. "Out of stock" inscription
3. Pre-order form, if necessary
4. Slightly shade the labels
5. Do not show at all, if necessary
