Opera starts to slow down terribly over time

Opera 11 (it was the same with previous versions, starting from the 9th) immediately after launch behaves normally, but after half a day of use, periodic brakes begin. Just a click on the link - for 30 seconds the HD can rustle - then the transition. I have 3Gb RAM, but this is not enough for Opera.

And if you try to close the Opera after that (with a cross, and not by killing the process), then generally a 5-10-minute access to the hard begins, something turns around there, taking up precious time.

Maybe someone knows how to optimize Opera as much as possible so that it does not have to be constantly restarted? Can I change something in opera:config or clean up some folders?

PS It so happens to me that the computer never turns off. Sometimes I just reboot. Accordingly, running applications do not close for several days, or even weeks.

Opera has been installed for a long time. Current "History" settings:

1) Opera is very sensitive to disk fragmentation. Try to defragment the opera folders (in program files, application data, local settings), you can do it right while the opera is running. For me, this has a positive effect on the responsiveness and speed of opening and closing.
2) Estimate how much opera folders take up for you (in appdata and local settings). If you have disabled disk cache, mail, visited pages search, then their size should be very small (up to 100 mb). If it takes a lot - a reason to be wary, determine what takes a lot.
3) There are so many icons in the Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera\icons\ folder that it opens for 30 seconds. I clean it (you can try, but make a backup).
4) Try disabling swap. This speeds up the work in most cases. But the main thing is to make sure that you do not exceed the memory limit (otherwise the programs will just start to crash).

I had a similar problem due to the large number of "Remember addresses", although it was on a rather old computer, something like an Athlon 3500+ with 1GB of RAM.
When I reduced this value to a thousand, the opera began to work much faster. The only pity is that the visited addresses began to disappear quickly :)

1) How much memory does Opera take when it starts to slow down?
2) How much memory do all running applications take when Opera starts to slow down?
3) How many megabytes of swap does the system use when Opera starts to slow down?
4) By the way, what system?
5) What does opera:memdebug show?

I didn’t notice this especially for her, even when the memory consumption exceeds 500 MB after a long and voluminous surfing.
Installed the 11th "clean".
Settings: memory cache - auto, disk cache - 50 MB.

then a 5-10-minute appeal to the hard begins in general, something turns over there, taking up precious time.

Yes, there is. More precisely, it probably was. In the 11th, it shuts down much faster than the previous ones.
Try clearing \Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera\icons in the user profile, favicons are cached this way, but unlike the page cache, they are never cleared.
Accordingly, running applications do not close for several days, or even weeks.

In this case, nothing too surprising. ;)
