On what basis to develop a template for OpenCart?

Hello! Please share your experience of how you are developing templates on the Opencart engine. Usually, I just take a standard template as a basis and modify it to fit my needs. Interested, maybe there is some kind of template for layout designers, on the basis of which it is more convenient to make your own. It is desirable that it be adaptive.
