Not hanging Wi-fi router. Does it exist?
I have a TP-LINK TL-WR941ND, for work, everything suits me, I don’t have such problems as “reduces speed”, “hangs when downloading torrents”. It hangs for me just like that, without load, often at night.
I tried to put it on blowing, but it still hangs, apparently the problem is not overheating. I changed it under the warranty for the same one, the same garbage.
You understand, one day you can’t go to the computer. remotely for data is not very pleasant, and I want to keep small services for myself on my home computer.
Does anyone have a router that works 24/7 and never hangs?

ASUS WL-500 gP, already 3 years old. I do not remember that it had to be specifically rebooted, except when reconfiguring.
Routers hang primarily due to poor-quality power.
If you have it hangs in the absence of load - look at the stability (noise, drops) and the level (voltage) of the power supply.
Mikrotik RB750G set up 2.5 years ago at the last job, not a single complaint. 2 providers are brought, balances loading.
PS On your TP-Link, check the power supply. If there is no desire to disassemble it and solder the capacitors, try taking another PSU and work from it.
I advise pieces of iron from Linksys. I had a WRT54G, worked for months, with and without torrents. Linksys is a good brand. WRT54G truth is now updated to another model. market.yandex.ru for help.
I do not advise pieces of iron from Linksys.
wrt120n vpn from beeline / kyivstar does not pull anything, there are bugs on all firmware updates.
there were complaints about them in other aspects, but it was this one that pissed me off.
In fact, if you need a completely non-falling wifi, then do not hesitate to take an old car, there is a wifi card from asus (you can use another one, but I somehow liked this brand the most ) and server ubuntu / freu and we have a file washer as a bonus, etc. and etc.
If you find an old stump, then you can put a radiator there and a normal power supply unit without a cooler or from 120 mm will whisper!
"Not hanging" this property cannot belong not only to the manufacturer, but even to the model. But only to a specific instance of the device.
For example, for 2 years, the always-on D-Link 514 has never hung up for me, despite the torrents.
And since you are going to keep a home server, why not start an Internet directly on it, set up routing and distribute WiFi already from it?
Do you want a normal wifi router? Buy a regular wi-fi access point + router from Mikrotik. The solution may not be as beautiful (2 boxes + 2 sockets) and cheap (1500 + 3000), but these are gigabit ports, full configuration (the web faces of the routers were not lying around) - starting from NAT, VLAN, ending with BGP and other things that are at home are of little use.
I haven't seen better solutions yet. All these routers are the devil of the box, in which everything depends on the phase of the moon at the time of release and the degree of curvature of the people who make the firmware. Personally, I tested a huge number of routers from D-Link, TP-Link, Linksys (after they became Cisco Small Business), Asus. Asus is more or less on top, but there have been cases of problems with them.
DLink DIR-300 is at home.
It didn’t hang once in 3 months ...
Before that, there was a Liksys WRT54G, just not once.
And even before that, there was DI-524, it hung a couple of times in 3 years.
I will not advise anything, I will state the fact.
Asus RT-N16 is at home
As a router, it's a good thing, I set it up and forgot it, but all these firmwares didn't give me rest, one or the other did not work.
As a result, I settled on the choice of Tomato, and to this day I sit on it. Uptime has increased, I forgot when I overloaded it already. No network loss problem in Win7 (DNS gateway is reset in stock firmware and DDWRT)
Zyxel Keenetic Lite
WAN-20Mbit
3 months is already working around the clock without a single freeze (torrents, etc.)
I have a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND, on native firmware it used to stop responding to 192.168.1.1, I recently installed DD-WRT, while it seems to be working without problems. You can also try to reflash.
I have this one at home: www.citilink.ru/catalog/servers_and_net_equipments/net_equipment/routers/518349/
It has two laptops under load, one home server where my sites are spinning.
I constantly download and distribute from torrents, watch videos on YouTube, listen to music.
In a word, I do not deny myself anything.
Never hung, never dropped the connection.
my asus with dd-wrt has been working for a year, never had to reboot
There was an ASUS WL-500gp at one time - a wonderful device, but died under the influence of winter and water dripping on it from shoes. Then there was DIR-315 - I toiled with it for a long time and eventually replaced it with an Apple Time Capsule - a super device, two networks and file storage. After that, there have never been any problems.
At the entrance to the apartment there is an ASUS RX3042H, into which another DIR 300 is plugged in further (wi-fi is not really needed yet, because it is used only by a netbook and only in one room).
The uptime for both is exactly the same as how much time has passed since the last power outage (usually this means that someone made a short circuit at home, because the power supply is very stable this way).
PS So far, I have not even encountered overheating problems and have not even installed additional radiators, let alone coolers.
PPS Torrents often download, clogging both channels (20 + 10 Mbps)
Never is a relative word.
My DLINK DIR-300 does not hang. Hangups (probably) were a couple of times in a year or two.
What am I doing wrong?
In the summer I bought my first router. I chose based on reviews to just turn it on and work. I settled on Zyxel Keenetic. Of course, it's not worth 1500, but I'm ready to pay another 1000 for stability and additional goodies.
D-Link DIR-320 - works well for a year, does not freeze. 3 computers + file cleaning with torrents.
But there is some problem, on Wi-Fi, if you connect one laptop from torrents, it downloads 2-2.5 Mb / s, when connected via a cord, it flies another 1 Mb / s. Prov says up to 4 MB speed. Why is WiFi slower? I put it next. Wi-fi, after all, should give up to 56 Mbps, and this is 7 Mb.
The most reliable are MikroTik, they are unrivaled. Even the most frail router will work more stable than more sophisticated other models. And to make on it in respect of routing. vpn and other things, everything is possible. There are no others like it.
Here it is recommended to look at the food.
My linksys x1000 regularly hangs on ADSL. The reason is a hanging pppoe session. Provider Rostelecom. Moreover, if pppoe is removed, it works fine for years. I have a suspicion that it's just a shitty firmware with clumsy pppoe processing. MikroTik keeps pppoe perfectly, even when the provider hangs up this connection, MikroTik perfectly re-uploads it.
Judging by the model, you do not have ADSL, but the question is still relevant. What type of connection: pppoe, l2tp, pptp, ipoe, what else is there? ... And now the provider's equipment may not handle these connections well, or your router may work clumsily with them, overflow memory and hang. It's not necessarily a hardware issue.
mikrtotik has the most vigorous, reliable and constantly updated firmware. Now there is no point in taking another router other than mikrotik. Verified by personal experience. openwrt? So-so option. I bought an OpenWRT router out of the box, i.e. everything in there is working properly. But they turned on a lot of things there, a lot of things are being sent in the background and it’s not entirely clear why this is, and as for L2TP / IPsec, it’s impossible to set up like that humanly. And there is no point in such joy if the VPN cannot be raised to work on the router. MikrtoTik allows you to disable everything, and it has excellent utilities for network diagnostics and traffic monitoring, excellent logs in which you can conveniently see the reasons why something is not configured for you.
I understand that this is already a question of the past, but it may be read by someone from the future. Maybe this will save someone time. Experience has shown that even if you need an ADSL connection, it is more practical to take a simple modem with a modem function, no routing, no wifi, no other features, a pure modem, and what kind of MikroTik router you need. and it will be a reliable link for ADSL. otherwise, if ASUS, Linksys, TP-Link, D-Link are sold to you, then you run the risk of having an asshole with constant freezes, due to shitty configured provider equipment, the jambs of which, your router will be unable to grind. And you won't know what to do with it.
On MikroTik, you can easily debug the problem and close the turd with a firewall, if any freezes occur, then add a conditional reboot with a script, in general, you won’t have to sell your router with a red muzzle, telling a new buyer that it didn’t suit you in color dress.
By the way! I sell Linksys X1000! "He did not match the color of my dress," and so a good router. And if in the mode only modem, it's generally gorgeous! Fire!
