Non-commercial game development - skills, subtleties?

Hello!
What do you think is better: to participate in Open-source projects or to do indie development?
And do I understand correctly that in the second case, in addition to knowledge of programming and engine design, you will have to master the skill of 2d-3d level design, models, drops, etc.?

Before climbing into someone's open source, it's better to just do all this and master it from your own experience by developing something of your own.

Better for what/who? To participate in open-source-projects of what?
Art for games can be bought, ordered or borrowed from opengameart.org (it's fine for stubs). Level design will have to do it yourself.

What is the purpose? Just for fun? Get Unreal 4 and burn your graphics card as much as you want. Experience? Write some elaborate and documented plug-in for Unity. AI or network.

It's better to start with the basics and decide on the topic ... Then watch how others write and correctly! And only then get into your projects with your head ... Although everything can change during the study of game development and you will find your team
