The service center is correct. You can install a " special " drive, but not for 30k, they are cheaper now. Such a disk is good because you can make a Fusion Drive based on it.
If you want a satash SSD, then the Samsung 850 PRO is a good choice. Just take a bigger one. There will be no room for a regular HDD. I installed the same 512 GB series on a 2013 iMac. There are no complaints.
