NAS with ZFS and a media center in one?
The essence of the matter: there was a NAS on FreeNAS 0.7.x on the old N230 atom, the mother had to be given away for use for other purposes. Now I have reconnected to a new provider with a comfortable speed, in connection with which the idea of reconstructing a NAS on a different hardware arose:
- HDD is taken from an old NAS, WD Green 1.5 Tb (WD15EADS-00P8B0)
- AMD A4 X2 3300 FM1, built-in HD6410D video
- Gigabyte mother GA-A75N-USB3
- 4 GB DDR3, Samsung
There are a couple of ideas for implementing a NAS together with a media center, while maintaining ZFS as the main file system:
1) Virtualization option once - leaving FreeBSD as a host, raise the guest system on the same machine , perhaps Windows, perhaps something based on Linux (like LinuxMCE).
Questions:
- What software to use for virtualization?
- Is it possible to properly enable video hardware acceleration in a virtual machine?
- Organization of access to the ZFS storage - probably emulation of network access via NFS / SMB, are there any other good options?
- What are the possible plugs with iron, because iron relatively new?
2) Dual-boot with a similar media system.
- Is it possible to work with ZFS from a system other than *BSD and Solaris? About zfsonlinux.org/ in the know, has anyone tried it in life? In general, I do not need write access, only read access is enough (I will have to reboot, but what to do ...).
3) Virtualization option 2 - Windows on the host, FreeNAS on the virtual machine, approximately corresponds to option 1, but without any problems with the drivers. Minus - the host itself eats a lot of resources, most likely you will have to buy more memory for the normal operation of the host and the virtual machine (ZFS wants a lot of memory for quick access, fast work is important: a gigabit network is at home).
- What else could be bad about this option, in addition to the one voiced?
Purposes of NAS: storage of backups, rocking torrents.
Media Center Goals: Play HD video via HDMI to TV (TV planned for purchase in the near future).

There is another option: install the ubuntu distribution kit, and xbmc on it as a media center, and next, in the same Linux, equip the NAS. Linux is not necessarily desktop, but that's how it is for me. Store all data for the NAS on a volume with ZFS, and linux on a 60 gb partition with ext3fs (for example)
If you want virtualization, I can offer another option: 2 virtual machines, the first with FreeNAS, the second with Linux, as above. In this case, you need to forward the video card to linux (tambourine score here ).
There are probably other options, but they haven't crossed my mind yet. According to the first option, I can answer questions about the subtleties of implementation.
