MS SQL virtualized a few years ago. Now already the 5th sphere, no problems have been noticed for all the time.
We use in Production at our place and deploy at Customers both vSphere 4.1 and vSphere 5.0. In installations of more than one server, the databases are usually placed on virtual disks stored on the storage system. No problems were observed. I recommend that you familiarize yourself with best practices from vendors (VMware, Microsoft) before deployment.
The biggest problem in deployment is SQL licensing in a virtual environment, often the cost of licenses can exceed the benefits of virtualization.
