We decided to go this way, since doing forwarding and and letting rdp through a proxy or vpn is already either extra costs or extra ways to access the server

In the firewall, catch outgoing connections to the rdp port and wrap it to your address.
It is done in the same way as with a transparent proxy or prohibition of dns spoofing
