Macbook and 128gb hard. install programs on external?

Bought a MacBook. The volume of the hard 128GB. Any experienced owners of these cars? How do you deal with space? Mac OS never used ... is it possible to install all the programs on an external drive? Will it help save space?

I support previous commentators. I have a 128GB ssd on a macbook. All music in Apple Music now does not take up disk space, the photo library is also in iCloud. Virtual machines take up a lot of space.
When installing the program, you can choose a location, but you can also simply copy the app file to an external hard drive and run it from there.
If you google, then, probably, the Applications folder can be moved to another section, but such a need has never arisen.

I have more than enough, another half is free.
But I don’t have music, photo collections, video films, extra documents and images on my laptop

My wife has 128 GB on Air, so Windows also costs through the boot camp. Enough :) Although I can’t imagine how she manages to do it
