Mac OS: how to accept from port and output to menu bar?

Venerable comrades! I have a question, I do not have an answer, I will be glad for any help.
I'm screwing the arduino. I output a key indicator from the sensor to the serial port. Everything is fine in the Arduino IDE, but now the project is ready for "production" :) and I wanted to get rid of the constantly open idea and its port monitor.

In this regard, I want something strange:
1. periodically catch what arrived at the port and
2. display it somewhere near the clock.

I skimmed through Automator - nothing like that.
I felt Processing - not at all.
Question: Has anyone done this? Kick in the right direction plz.
