In some cases, restarting pulseaudio can help:

$ pulseaudio --kill
$ pulseaudio --start

After that, go to the input / output devices - everything should be in place.

Yes, there is such a bug in Ubuntu-like ones - it does not automatically switch from HDMI to speakers. I rarely connect a laptop to a TV, so it doesn’t bother me to manually switch to speakers later, but I would also like to find out a way to cure this shortcoming.

Similar situation. Elementary lost sound after connecting the TV via hdmi. Helped setting through pavucontrol
