Linux x64 or x86 + pae to home computer?
Hello everyone, I do not want to ask the question which is better. I just wanted to know who would put what on their home computer and why. I hesitate because of 4 GB of RAM, otherwise the machine does not perform specific loaded processes.

Somehow I installed the x64 version on my home computer, I didn’t see any tangible performance gain for my tasks (Internet, movies \ music, virtualbox ..). The only thing I noticed was that the applications began to eat significantly more memory, and there were some problems with the installation with Skype. So I chose x86 + pae for myself.
If you have 4GB of RAM, then it’s better to install x64 right away
. And it’s better to install not pure Linux on your home, but some modification, for example Mint
On a desktop with x64, there are a non-zero number of problems with proprietary software. The creators of Skype, Flash and other garbage should have their hands torn off and sewn to the ass so that everyone around them knows who they are.
Problems are solved, but still create a lot of inconvenience. For example, in x64, I was never able to enable hardware acceleration of flash movies with my intel hd.
Graphically, the architecture of the K8 family of processors can be viewed here www.amd.com/ru/products/desktop/processors/athlon/Pages/amd-athlon-processors-key-architectural-features.aspx
Details and in Russian can be read here www.sd- company.su/article/computers/processor_amd
And with the release of the Bulldozer architecture hard.xp-7.ru/?tag=amd&paged=2, this becomes even more obvious.
Not to mention the fact that I checked on the example of openSUSE and Ubuntu the performance gain on AMD is more than 30%, and about 10-15% on Intel infa from a friend, he is a Gentushnik.
I use PAE with 6GB RAM.
No problems were noticed, the flight is normal.
Naturally, there is a memory limit per process, but memory is mainly needed for virtual machines, so I have no problems.
In terms of memory consumption, x86 + pa is the best choice. With the flash, the problem was solved, because. adobe finally gave birth to the 64-bit version. The processor is no less important, if it is Intel, then when switching to 64 bits, you will get a gain of 10-15%, and if AMD - more than 30% (what can you do, their architecture is better tailored for X86_64, while Intel has only an extension). Now, if you had Itanium (IA64) - then Intel is out of competition.
It happened to me that there were two gigs, there was a 32-bit axis. I bought two more gigs, there was no time to rearrange everything, I updated the kernel to pae. And so it remained. Everything works well, I did not notice any problems.
