As for the distribution, there are no special preferences for Python. On my own behalf, I advise you not to be led by fashion, and instead of the hackneyed Ubuntu, put some LinuxMint with Mate (aka Gnome 3) as a desktop. Strict and familiar design. Everything else is like everywhere else. An early fork of Ubuntu, based on it. Almost 100% compatible.

хендбук по freebsd — есть на русском — мир юникс.
хендбук по дебиан — есть на русском, по дебиану и убунтоподобным — один из старейших, наравне со слакварью, дистрибутивов.
хендбук по генту — конструктор «Собери Сам!» при желании «собрать самому», помоему, тоже есть под линукс.
книги по редхату — для rpm-основанных дистрибутивах.
плюс книгу по bash — для того чтобы понять, что такое шелл-скриптинг, оно же *.bat в ms-dos.
плюс книгу по написанию шаблонов — паттернов, они же регекспы
плюс, лично мне очень понравился хендбук по питону и mysql, достаточно легкий и достаточно популярный ЯП и субд, которая чаще всего используется на хостинге для систем управления контентом сайтов — wordpress, joomla, drupal.
well, then - apache / nginx, mail systems - sendmail, posfix, exim.
