Linux kernel vs BSD kernel?
Hello habralyudi. Help with a couple of questions:
1) On the desktop: how does the performance of subject kernels compare
2) ipfw vs netfilter. Are all the items listed in this email: lists.netfilter.org/pipermail/netfilter/2004-Octob... up to date ?

1) The linux kernel is more productive, especially when it comes to X-s, i.e. graphics output. Linux is also much better with hardware support. What for the home can be a major factor. FreeBSD, personally, I like to keep on servers, tk. iron is more standard there, and no desktop functions are needed there. And, of course, it’s a matter of habit that it’s easier for someone to maintain.
2) I don't think anything has changed. From myself I will say that I know ipfw better. There are more chips in iptables, but I don’t need them at home, the router copes with everything perfectly, where the same iptables is installed
1) BSD on the desktop is not needed. BSD is for servers. None of the BSD systems were designed for desktop. (all kinds of PC-BSD and DesktopBSD are just GUI utilities for installing and configuring FreeBSD)
2) Partially. ipfw is still faster, but iptables has more bells and whistles as mentioned above. BSD does have a better networking subsystem than Linux (especially OpenBSD).
For what purposes do you need that Linux, that BSD, perhaps for your tasks there will be no difference.
and so the question is equivalent to “what is better motor honda or toyota?”
A friend has had a BSD on the desktop for 5 years for sure, I am silent about the server.
I have desktops and a good dozen servers live peacefully on ubunts/debians.
1) On the desktop, Linux obviously decides, since most of the software has already been assembled for it.
2) Bullshit and provocation seven years ago.
1) Linux on the desktop is more profitable due to the available proprietary software (the same skype, evernote, dropbox, etc.), and fribsd has no problems updating the system and application software. About hardware support - it is the same for branded hardware, and everyone works equally badly with the Chinese non-name, but if you put it on a laptop, it's definitely Linux.
2) the difference between firewalls can only be felt with the serious use of the above systems as routers, but in general - there are three firewalls in freezd - IPFW, PF, IPFilter, each solves certain tasks a little better than all others.
