Linux for a flash drive?

A couple of years ago I saw modular Linux (that is, at the root of the "kernel" and a folder with "archives" in which additional software was stored) specifically for CDs and flash drives; it seems to have its roots in SuSE. Can you tell me what kind of distro?

Maybe it's Slax ?

The modular structure makes it easy to add any software to Slax. If you are missing your favorite text editor, network utility or game, just download the module with the program and copy it to Slax, no installations or settings.

And does anyone know the current distribution with a root in ro squashfs and au / unionfs on top of it for rw - so that it doesn’t get killed by reboots? Of course, you can pack it yourself, but suddenly there is something ready-made.

Any distribution kit you know is installed on a USB flash drive, the bootloader is slightly finished and everything superfluous is taken out to ram-disk and / or / dev / null (logs, for example).
my friend had a debian manual kastaneda.kiev.ua/desktop/live_usb.html
