Link href:mailto and detection of an active mail client - is it possible?

Greetings
There is a href:mailto link with the caption "write a letter". There are two options for the occurrence of events:
- The person clicks on the link, the mail client opens and the person writes and sends a letter.
- The person does not have any email client and when clicking on the link nothing happens.
Question: is it possible to determine the presence / absence of an email client and, if there is a client, then we go according to the first option, and if there is no client, then do something, for example, call alert?

Unlikely. This is system information. Only the browser can access it, most likely it is in it that the default behavior of the link is configured. It is hardly possible to learn something from the js code without the participation of the client.
