Launching Applications from a Browser / Adding a Protocol

The question is how to run applications from a browser on Linux. it is desirable to work in KDE4. For example, in order to play the file /home/kaneua/foo.mp3 in Amarok, you need to enter amarok:///home/kaneua/foo.mp3 in your browser.

Globally, I think not, as well as in Windows it is only for IE. And so - you can try to dig into the configs of opera, chrome and firefox, they allow it.

This is how it is done in Windows:
Registering an Application to a URL Protocol and this is how a torrent and others are registered.

Also take a look at the gconf /desktop/gnome/url-handlers section, in theory, a lot of people should pick it up from there.
