Laptop and VGA splitter

There is a laptop with a VGA output, an external monitor is connected to it, everything works.
Question: If you buy and connect such a thing: image
- will the OS see the second external monitor as a separate device, or will the same picture be displayed on both monitors connected through this thing? If so, how can I achieve what I want (connecting two external monitors to a laptop)? There is no DVI output on the laptop, only HDMI.

When you connect the cord in the photo, the OS, of course, will not see the second monitor.
Laptop monitor + VGA-connected monitor. I'm afraid otherwise.

There is also a real VGA splitter in resolution for 2 and 3 monitors: www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/th2go/
