"A simple list of articles with a photo" is a standard feature of Joomla. If something is not displayed, then this is a template problem, not Joomla itself.
Joomla 2.5 has been deprecated since late 2013. Over the past 7 years, Joomla has seen a lot of changes, including in terms of security. I recommend updating to the latest version 2.9.23.
