Is WWW3 a new protocol or just a subdomain?

Sites like www3.site.com , or even www18.zippyshare.com are common.
Why is this done and how is the redirect from the main www?
Thanks entermix for the answer, but still, both server and search engines understand that www3 is a mirror. Or are they not indexed, but purely used as a reserve?
