Is windows suitable for javascript development? A friend told me to install linux, since there will be many pitfalls on windows, and various problems, is this true?

Any, absolutely any OS will do, where there is a text editor and a browser.
Better text editor with syntax highlighting for HTML, CSS and JS. I personally like Atom, but whatever you want.
The only reason to install Linux is because of the cool tools for pentesting and testing in general. But it won't affect the code itself.
PS And you need to ask a friend directly what are the pitfalls?) I coded with both Windows 10 and Debian. The difference is only in the speed of the OS and the default browser.

Development is not in the OS but in the development environment. Choose what works best for you.
And in any case, the novice developer does not care about the OS at all.
Get to the nuances when the OS will matter to you - understand why you need it - install it.
There is a reverse situation when you need to develop javascript under IE, and you only have to work under Windows
