Is there cross-platform software for captioning/overlaying an image?

My girlfriend needs a software that could write the same type of signature on the pictures.
I would very much like the program to work both under android and under ubuntu (my computer), and I need the ability to select a font (italics are there, that's all)
Maybe there is something like that? Or what do you use?

And what, the trivial overlay of layers in Photoshop (on one photo, on the other - a signature) - does not fit?

Try GIMP. It works on ubuntu, windows and mac.
