What computer science book would you recommend for a novice programmer to read?

I started learning JavaScript a few months ago. I feel a serious lack of knowledge of the basics of computer science and understanding of how it all works at its core. I tried to find a decent textbook on my own, but they all look more like some kind of tutorial for moms. I can use Word and Excel, and I can turn the computer on and off - I don't need all that. What's more, I can write an entire text game in Python, or create a crappy website using JavaScript. Recommend a book or resource on computer science.
