Is there an analogue of MPD for video playback?

There is a wonderful program for Linux MPD (Music Player Daemon) , but is there an analogue but for video. As I understand it, mpd reads the audio file, somehow encodes the data and sends it to / dev / dsp, something like this scheme of work. Is it possible to do the same but for the video output?
