Is there a way to use shadows from Android L on legacy APIs?

Is there a way to use shadows from Android L on legacy APIs? That is, assign a View to the elevation and TranslationZ elements. As far as I understand, such a function is not implemented in the AppCompat library (or rather, there is a ViewCompat.setElevation(View, int) method, but it does not work)
Perhaps there are some libraries similar in functionality? Or other ways to work with shadows conveniently
