Both the audience and the need of this audience directly depends on what you want to offer.
If it's just "adding friends", chats in groups, uploading lectures and homework to a file hosting service and class schedule, then there are enough such projects.

You need to offer the user something that he cannot / is not convenient to do in VK.
Otherwise, they will choose VK, so everyone is registered by default.
Fact 2:
You need to have a competitive edge over other niche projects. Google 4-5 existing projects, see what they can and can't do.
You need to do more and better, in different proportions. Or 20% of unique functionality, 80% for the improvement of existing analogues. Or vice versa, or equally.
In general, you need to understand that in almost any niche there is now minimal, but still competition. The question "will it take off or not take off" rests on whether you can offer something for which the user will have to go to you.
