Is there a future for such a project?
There is an idea - to make a portal that will collect information about all the companies in the city - services, description, contacts, portfolio of work, etc. In the future, this can be expanded to regions.
On most of these portals, it is done very simply - the database is parsed from other sites, while there is only the name and telephone number of companies (directories).
In this case, I would like to focus on a full detailed description of the services of each company with examples of the work of each (portfolio). Be sure to consider usability.
Do you think there is a future for such projects? And will it be in demand?

Of course I have. I was engaged in the creation and development of such a project for 2 years as a programmer and ideological inspirer.
But the approach to such a project must be very high quality. We had a staff of 8-10 people who were engaged in calling companies, drafting contracts, maintaining the relevance of data in the database, and much more. The result is a large regional portal with approximately 10,000 companies for a city of 500,000 inhabitants.
The project brings a good income from advertising companies within the site and has a good potential.
If you want, write in a personal, I will throw a link and I can answer many of your questions, as I have good experience with such a site.
By the way, the directory alone will not work, IMHO.
News, announcements, posters, etc. is another matter.
Otherwise, you will have very few visitors, and even those are “disposable”: they came, found out the phone number and address of the organization, and left.
For some reason, he immediately presented a portfolio of funeral services. In fact, you will need a very active data update community, and this is the main problem. If the plans are to receive money from such advertising, then why not, it can fight back.
There are information systems (2GIS, for example). They have everything you need, but there is definitely no portfolio of work there (the maximum is the company's website, where it can be). You can add user reviews to the project (moderation is required).
As for demand, I don't know. Usually I know which area of organizations I need, and I simply display a list for this area, then I call the phones of those companies that I: a) heard about; b) they are convenient for me (in terms of location, mode of operation, etc.).
And who will collect the portfolio? You yourself, or will you ask organizations to provide it? (I'm afraid that more than half will refuse in this case - your project is not promoted so much that they want to advertise in it).
Yes, there really are no good catalogs of companies (at least in my region).
