Is there a difference between laser and LED mice?

I recently found out that my mouse, which lights up with a red light, is not a laser, but an LED.
I went looking for the difference. Everywhere they write about greater accuracy. But who needs more accuracy if I already hit everything I want on the screen. Why is this all?
Can anyone feel the difference?
Theoretically, due to monochromatic light, the laser will give a clearer picture of the surface. Maybe the laser will work on a smoother surface, where the LED will not see the difference between the positions. But these are some extreme options. Most of us work with a mat or some kind of not-so-glassy surface.
What's the point of laser mice? Is it mostly marketing?

There was a time, ≈2005-2007, the LEDs brutally "jumped". Now I have a bunch of more modern mice, and I don’t remember a single jump. The conditions, however, are not particularly harsh.
