Guitar Pro? for embedding in your program, you can read three from others - kguitar.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/kguitar/trunk/kguitar/kguitar/convertgtp.cpp?revision=1012&view=markup (this is just parsing the GP format)

Yes, GP is the first option that suggests itself. There is another option, although it is difficult to call it non-textual. I once heard about MusicXML , but it is not common, and I did not use it, although the XML representation of data is closer to me. Take a look if you're interested.
