Is there a base station in the elevator shaft?
In some elevators, the phone catches, and in some it does not. For example, at work, the elevator car is completely metal, but the phone works. How do radio waves get into it? Maybe small base stations are installed in the elevator shaft?

Interest Ask! :) There is an assumption that in some mines only the elevator equipment is grounded, while in others the elevator cage is also grounded, which jams the signal. In addition, the materials from which the elevator cage is made and the walls of the shaft of the house also affect. Copper muffles more, aluminum is weaker.
I doubt that even signal amplifiers / repeaters are installed in elevator shafts, not like expensive access points (base stations). Although expensive ultra-modern high-rise buildings may have signal repeaters.
PS
The above is just a guess without technical knowledge...
