Is the timthumb.php script dangerous for dle?

I decided to try the timthumb.php script for my site in order to reduce the weight of the downloaded news previews, but I read a lot of negativity about the vulnerability of this script, mainly from cms wordpress users. Does anyone know if I should use it or if there are alternatives?
