Is the Most Viewed 24 Hour feed really that important?

Is it worth it to make on your site a block feed of the most popular for 24 hours or a week, which would be shown on almost all pages of the site on the right or left? Also done by the way on toster.ru
Doesn't it distract the user from the main content

This is another way to take the user into content that would normally be ignored.
Those. if I just saw the question "How can a website designer develop his taste?" in the feed? I would have thought "What the x?!" and scrolled through the tape further.
Here I see - a ton of subscribers to the question, the discussion is in full swing, all things. I went, looked, read, maybe left a comment.
The result for the user -> ate more content
The result for the service -> round of discussions, socialization.
