Is the jabber service up to date?

Are public jabber services relevant now?
I want to launch in the region, to replace one very paid IM, the experience of others is interesting

Try it. It's better to do it and find out that nobody needs it, than to do nothing and regret that you didn't try. Seriously.
XMPP, with all its advantages, unfortunately, was not needed by people, mainly because of closed corporate messengers and chats with their own protocols, and on the other hand, because of public services such as Skype and Viber, again with their own protocols.
And in fact, XMPP is another "zoo".

When VK stopped supporting XMPP, I got this response from them:
“XMPP is an old protocol that must die. Try using the API. »
In addition, this is a protocol with mandatory encryption, all drug dealers use it
