Is open source patenting required?
I'm going to do an open project to create a keyboard for typing. Is it necessary to register a patent for this development, or will it be enough to publish the source materials under some kind of open license?
There are several great ideas that are suitable for patenting the “iron” part of the keyboard, and not the software. That is why I am afraid that some patent troll will not receive a patent for my own development, and then will not demand payment of money, thus ruining the project.

Definitely worth patenting. After obtaining a patent, you will be the exclusive owner of the rights (sorry for the tautology) to your development. And accordingly, you can grant the rights to free use of your development to anyone.
In the event that you do not patent your development, then:
1) You will not have exclusive rights to it, and therefore you will have nothing to provide for open use;
2) It goes without saying that someone else will be able to get a patent, as you rightly noted. And then you will not only be able to protect your development, because. legally it does not exist, but you will even probably fall under a lawsuit from the patent owner.
Quote from the Civil Code, part four:
In total, without a patent there will be no confirmation of either your authorship, or your rights to an invention, utility model or industrial design, or other delights provided by our legislation. Theoretically, you will remain the author of the development, but I don’t know how to use it in the fight against patent trolls. Haven't come across this yet.
Another question is whether it is worth spending on patenting? It might be worth considering the next option. You draw up all the documentation for your development, find an interested investor and, under an agreement, transfer it to him for patenting and subsequent production under the agreement. Under the contract, the right to obtain a patent is transferred to the investor in this way. Of course there is a fee.
I think the large open source communities would be happy to help patent an open source project. Because this is ideologically correct.
Hmm, if the project is open, then it will have many authors. Each new one to contribute to the patent holders? And if you assign the rights to all the developments of all authors to yourself, then this language does not turn out to be called an open project.
